The Bristol & West Working Gundog Society promotes and encourages the training of gundogs to work in the field, to compete in Gundog Working Tests and Field Trials.
We have three sections –
- Hunt, Point and Retrieve – HPR
- Field Trials
- Working Tests
- Training for handlers and their dogs
Spaniels were the breed that inspired the formation of the Society in 1972 and today we have a large and thriving spaniel membership. Springer, Cocker, and from time to time, AV events are organised. Whatever type of Spaniel you have you are sure to find opportunity with us. Training is provided by coaches well-known and experienced in the field trial world. To get involved, please call our Spaniel Field Trial Secretary or the Test Secretary.
Our Retriever section is very active and last year ran a full programme of Field Trials providing variety and opportunity for all. Our Gundog Working Test and Field Trial days have been set on some of the finest gundog venues to be found; ground in wonderful settings that test the dogs and their handlers. We have experienced trainers in our membership who organise training and will be pleased to help. To get involved, please give our Retriever Secretary a call.
With a section for the breeds that Hunt, Point and Retrieve, we are one of the relatively few gundog societies in the region with a section specifically for HPRs. We run Field Trials, Pointing Tests and Gundog Working Tests and have expert trainers who specialise in these breeds and are proud to host several events throughout the year. If you have one of these breeds and are looking for your HPR home or just a little help, then do please give our HPR Secretary a call.
Open and Novice Field Trials are held by all three sections during the season and Licensed by the Kennel Club. Gundog Working Tests are held in the close season. Training is available throughout the year either in advertised groups or by arrangement.
Membership is open to those interested in working gundogs. Prospective members are invited to get in touch to find out more about the Bristol and West. Our members have a common interest in owning, training and working their dogs according to their breed purpose and new members at any level of knowledge and capability are welcome. Become a member: Go to the Membership tab to download a membership application form.
Volunteer: As well as competing in our events, throughout the year, volunteers are always needed to assist with running our events -Trials, Tests and Training. Helping is a great way to get involved, to watch and learn. If you would like to be considered to assist please go to the contact tab to register your interest by emailing the Secretary.
The management of the Society is the responsibility of a committee elected at an AGM, held as soon as possible after the end of the financial year, i.e. 1st March
