Our hosts Ivor and Nick Bevis looked after us superbly. Nick Bevis, steward of the beat kept the days flowing with plenty of game. Paul Ford and his team of guns, shot brilliantly on all three days.
The judges were Judy Rainey, Sean McGrath, Kevin Haynes and Simon Capstick.
Thanks to the helpers, Laurie chief steward, Brigetta with the red flag, Stevie with his picking up dog and John the game carrier.
The first day was walked up in a huge undulating area of white grass, which made for some challenging retrieves.
Eight dogs were taken through to the second day. We walked on the side of a hill with a long lake at the bottom. The other side of the lake was a strip of grass and then a wood. Clare Baker and her lovely team of spaniels pushed birds out of the wood over the guns. In the gallery we had a great view of dogs swimming across the lake for retrieves.

BWWGS AV All-Aged Retriever Trial was held near Leominster, Herefordshire on the 25th November at the kind invitation of Mrs Jennifer White and family. We also owe our very grateful thanks to Mr James Starkey for facilitating this trial and for his excellent organization.
It was a great pleasure to welcome Mr Terry Dukes to the ground whom many will remember as a popular A panel judge in past years, and also to Mr Tony Griffiths And Mr Richard Edwards, all of whom helped out as game carriers.
Our judges were Mr David Brown A panel, Mrs Kate Smith B panel, Mr Julian Price and Ms Elizabeth Davies NP.
The day dawned cold but brilliantly sunny with wonderful views over rural Herefordshire. The ground was perfect for trialling with the 1st round in stubble turnip less than knee high enabling dogs to mark well and handlers to see their dogs at all times. It was almost entirely partridge put up by the guns' spaniels working the line meticulously and the guns who shot brilliantly, judging the distance to bring the birds down to make useful retrieves.
The judges were generous in giving the dogs plenty of time to hunt the area but nevertheless several dogs were lost possibly due to inexperience and no doubt not helped by the cold conditions making scenting more difficult. Ian Marshalsays' Cwmcarrog Guto did some lovely work holding the area with considerable style.
By the 2nd round the field was reduced by half and we moved to an area where sections of rape was interspersed with the stubble turnip making it more difficult for dogs to mark. Here it was mostly pheasants with two or three runners which proved difficult and we lost four more dogs. The remaining three were well tested on pheasant just over the brow of the hill where Boggwater Bombay Sapphire handled by Andrew Lines took an excellent runner, no doubt one of the reasons for this stylish and eye-catching little bitch being awarded Guns' choice. Etomanni Ludo of Corsemalzie handled beautifully on an unmarked bird and Cynhinfa Allie of Mynydd Du also did some thorough, well controlled work in this round.
After the 3rd round the judges decided that they had seen enough and the trial was declared over. In his summing up A panel judge Dave Brown praised the ground and said it was the best trial ground he had judged at and he would be happy to judge there again. He also praised the guns for their excellent shooting and thanked everyone for the happy atmosphere throughout.
Results:
1st Carol Probert with Etomanni Ludo of Corsemalzie
2nd Josh Griffiths with Cynhinfa Allie of Mynydd Du
3rd and Guns' choice Andrew Lines with Boggwater Bombay Sapphire

The trial was held at East Dudley Farm Grittleton by kind permission of our hosts Mr. and Mrs. Jonny and Georgina Walker, and superbly run by the game keeper Steve Brankin.
This was a driven trial in stunning settings, producing some challenging retrieves especially from the last 2 drives.
Many thanks to the judges Phil Bruton, Sally Richardson, Ellena Nunneley and David Godding.
A special thank you to Iris Wright our Chief Steward; her vast experience quietly keeps us all in order. Also to the game carriers Betsy Bradford and Tom Mixture, the bird markers Pete Bradford, Linda Carse, John Mixture and Tim Rudd. And Clare Gould who cooked bacon and sausage baps for the judges and helpers, then ran her dog when 2 people pulled out on the morning of the trial.
Unfortunately we ran with 13 dogs. The day before the trial I contacted the 1st 5 reserves, no of whom wanted the run if offered. Time ran out.
1st Ffynongain Judge - owned and handled by Mark Stevens
2nd Bellspaddle Banjo of Highshot - owned and handled by Brasil Smith

Working Test Results 2023
Bristol and West Working Gundog Society held its Novice and Open Working Tests at Shepherds Fold Farm, Broadway on 25th June.
Our Particular thanks got to Mr and Mrs Terry and Maureen Booth who invited us to use their fantastic ground after short notice and to Paul Green for organising the relocation of the Tests. The ground provided ample shaded parking and holding areas for handlers and their dogs. A very full card for both Tests meant that our judges had to work tirelessly through a warm but breezy day to give all the dogs a fair chance and to allow the best dogs on the day to come out on top. Our thanks to the judges Helen Goodwin, Jill Gardner, Karen Pinker and Steve Newitt for their sterling work and for setting some challenging but fair tests. All feed back on the ground and the tests has been 100% positive.
Our thanks also to the stoic team of volunteers who threw dummies, stewarded and helped with refreshments and general organising on the day. Without you we have no sport. It is noted that is is always the same ones who have to step forward. Thank you so much.
