REPORT For reasons beyond my control, this year we ended up with our Two Day Open at Alvington and amid all sorts of dire warnings about lack of available birds; a record number of withdrawals from the original running order and one of my judges having to withdraw due to injury just before the Trial……I was more than a little worried about how it would turn out. Add to that the fact that both Tony Curtis (landowner) and Stuart Kear (keeper) insisting, on the morning of the Trial, that we were going to have one massive drive – 50 birds down – which should see us through the first day………despite my weak pleading that people didn’t come to Alvington for a driven Trial…… and wondering how I would tell the Judges this…… So imagine my surprise – not to mention relief – when we got to the beet and lined out obviously for a walk-up – (and I had to hold up the line while I put my over-trousers on.) It was all a giant wind-up – thank God!, and I’m delighted to report that from then on it turned out to be one of the best Trials yet! Birds came at regular intervals and the guns shot brilliantly, allowing just enough distance to make challenging retrieves but still getting the birds down in the beet with very few runners. I believe during the whole Trial we only lost three birds. At this point I have to pay tribute to our wonderful guns. We are immensely fortunate that they come back every year to shoot for the Bristol and West Two Day Open because as Jayne Coley said in her address at the end of the Trial, it is the guns who largely make the success of a Trial – and they certainly did this! So many thanks to Ken Morgan, Anthony Watkins, Adrian Smith, Rob Knight, Joe Saxton and last but by no means least, Andy Pattinson, who organises all our guns for Trials and training days. Not only do they shoot excellently but they also clearly enjoy watching the dogs work and keep up a good humoured banter amongst themselves which adds to the happy atmosphere of the days. Many thanks also to the Judges, Jayne Coley, Phil Parkins, Dorothy Walls-Duffin and particularly to Thelma Salaman who so kindly stepped into the breach when Kevin Brady was so unfortunately injured just before the Trial. Feedback from several competitors kind enough to comment confirmed my impression that the judging was excellent – fair and considerate – which also contributed to the lovely relaxed atmosphere throughout. Dog work was of a high standard from the start but it is generally recognised that Alvington is difficult ground so inevitably dogs were gradually lost. I don’t think anyone was dropped at the end of the second round and we managed to get in a third round with one retrieve each before the end of the first day. By this time there were eight dogs left to go into day two. The Club dinner was very well attended with three competitors also present and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. Unfortunately the two guns’ awards – the Top Gun and the Duvet Award – have both vanished without trace so we are no longer able to present them – sorry guns! The second day began with a duck drive over the fields beyond the duck ponds. The remaining dogs were required to be handled at considerable distances and hunting duck in long, cold grass also proved difficult. The field was reduced to four dogs which had final retrieves in the stubble turnips above the duck ponds. All the dogs in the awards had been thoroughly tested on a variety of ground by the end of the Trial. Many thanks to those who helped out: our Chairman, Geoff Shaw, who attended the first day as one of the game carriers along with Dorothy’s husband, Bob Duffin and of course to Hilary Smith for her help and support as usual with Stewarding and cake maker extrordinaire; to Meg Inglis for being the red flag and for her contribution of sandwiches and cake for lunch; also to Di Wiggin who also made sandwiches, despite getting a run from the reserve list the night before and kindly acted as picker-up for the second day; also thanks to Paula Cullis who only came to observe but got dragged into helping with Stewarding and made an excellent job of it; and to Victoria Watkins whose lovely photographs will soon be available on this web. (Incidentally, Victoria would be delighted to photograph anyone’s dog if they would like to contact her through the Society.) . I must say thank you to all those marvellous people who were prepared to give up runs in Trials and arrangements with family and friends if I was not able to find a replacement Judge. It makes you realise that despite all the cut-throat competition that exists out there, there are still many genuine people who are prepared to make personal sacrifices to better our sport. It’s these people who make it all worth while.

Judges Mr. Chris Brain (A), Mr. Dave Probert (B), Mr. Nick Rees and Mr Steve Cullis
1st Jane Tydeman's, Lab Dog Roundcopse Ash ( FTCh Maverick's Goose x Wendearose Nickel of Roundcopse )
2nd Mick Downes, Lab Dog Nobsquinton Reef ( FTCh Mansengreen Diesel of Birdgreen x FTCh Nobsquinton Lily )
Guns Choice John Mixture's, Lab Dog Kaliture Argan
REPORT Our first Novice Trial began with a duck drive where we lost two dogs however the duck did not fly as well as hoped and we were not able to finish the first round here. We then moved into the stubble turnips where dogs found it difficult to find birds and several were lost round the ponds. Three ducks were said to be on one pond but Phil Bruton’s Flatcoat found a wounded one under the bank only to lose it when it dived. Two further dogs refused to enter the water. Jane Tydeman’s yellow dog made a smart entry and retrieved a duck from the far bank, and went on to win the trial. The remaining ducks were retrieved very smartly by the picker up’s dog, John Mixture’s Lab Dog, Kaliture Argan for which the guns decided to award him Guns’ Choice!.

REPORT Once again the weather was wet and the duck drive did not produce enough birds to finish the first round, even though Vic very wisely decided to give each dog one retrieve only. A couple of dogs were lost here and we moved into the roots. Birds proved scarce here and eventually we moved over to the stubble turnips where game was more available. Jane Mann’s Golden Retriever Dog Holway Humber did some tidy work and had a two dog eye wipe. Kim Jinks dog also showed very promising form as did Kevin Lewis’ bitch Roger Phillips young dog did some lovely hunting and picked a bird at considerable distance which had been down some time although unfortunately his outrun was marred by the dog pulling into cover several times.

3rd Mr. Barry Cooper's Prodydog Mikey of Wapsac, (FT Ch Millcottage Pathfinder x Ruby Glen)
REPORT This Trial started with one of the A Panel Judges and two competitors stuck in a 23 mile tail back of traffic on the M5. Disaster threatened as the three A Panels running kept low profiles in case, but with a slight delay both the Judge and one of the competitors turned up. Sadly the other, who was Margaret Allen, couldnt make it and we all sympathized with her though possibly Mike Larkin did so with a smile on his face as he was able to substitute his Open dog in her place. Despite the late start and attendant drama, it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and good humoured Trials of all. This has to be largely due to the four lovely judges who all got on so well and even managed the odd joke (very odd some times) from time to time, and also to our spectacular guns who shot even more brilliantly than usual and made it an excellent Trial for everyone. Many thanks to Alan and Sue Schofield who drove down Thursday night from north of Aberdeen to judge for us on the Fri. Alan we really appreciated having you down here and it was an added pleasure to have Sue too. Robert Atkinson was the Judge who had to circumnavigate the M5 hold up and in doing so missed breakfast but we had asked chef to make him up a couple of bacon butties and insisted he eat them before we started the Trial. Keith Broomfield and Phil Highfield completed the magnificent foursome. Thanks also to the guns...... Adrian (Dead-eye Dick) Smith......Mike (Dark Horse) Anstey......Sean (That was my bird!) Leigh......Jason (Skittleman) Thompson......Ken (The incomparable) Morgan and last, but by no means least......Anthony (I always shoot for Annies Trials!) Watkins with his lovely daughter, the crack photographer, Victoria. (Those who visit the website will see proof of Victorias talent,) and on Sat. our very own Andy Pattinson took the place of Sean Leigh. Sean took over from Stewart Kear as Steward of the Beat on Saturday and we have to thank them both for their excellent running of the line. I would also like to thank my good friend Hilary Smith for once more being an excellent Dog Steward and making sure I didn't make any mistakes: also for her sandwiches and incomparable cakes which lure in volunteers from miles around! Thanks also to Meg for sandwiches, cake and bravely bearing the red flag and bullying the field into keeping up. To Beth Payne for coming to stay, keeping me sane(ish), making sandwiches and generally being such very good company. Thanks also to Mark Dunn and Adrian Reason for game carrying and to everyone who took part for being such excellent sports. Levenghyl Beetles win was the second in that week, having won the IGL Two Day on the Wed/Thurs. This win also made him up to FT Ch. I believe these were Claire's first wins in Open and this is her first FT Ch. We extend our warmest congratulations to Claire and her very clever dog.
(Incidentally - Claires no. was 13 which only goes to prove that it certainly IS lucky for some!)

Tony Griffiths Olivertash Lilly The evening of 16th October was the most fraught I have experienced since becoming Field Trial Secretary. Until then only three people had pulled out but that night I rang over ten people to fill the stake! Some of these had perfectly valid reasons such as having won a Trial the day before however those who had accepted runs elsewhere and not bothered to let me know or couldnt take time off work were difficult to sympathise with as I also had sandwiches to make, paperwork to check, the car to load and dinner with the judges at 7.30 pm and this only after I had attended to my own dogs. Thank Heaven for Elaine Kelleher who was staying with me for the Trial and who kindly and happily mucked in to help out. Never was help more appreciated! But former troubles were soon forgotten as the two days were gloriously sunny and the heavy overnight dews gave us good scenting conditions. The guns were all local boys and most of them are dog people themselves, a great asset when shooting for Trials. They shot brilliantly with the usual amount of good natured banter and enjoyed watching the dogs work all of which contributed to the pleasant atmosphere throughout. We saw a lot of very good dog work which must have made it a difficult job for the judges. The first eye-wipe was Thelma Salamans with Cordomsal Buzz over Huw Joness Caulliechat Rebel of Garngoch. Chris Brains dog Hillridge Flush impressed us with a far distant partridge, well out of sight of his handler as did John Halsteads Davoulin Fraser of Drakeshead. Elaine Kellehers dog Jagdens Druid took a nice runner out of the beet into the hedge and in the second round, eye-wiped Vic Blemmings Minterburn Villera Jake. Don Jamess Llanover Willow also did some neat work including a nice retrieve inside the hedge. But the dog that stood out from the start was Keith Broomfields dog FT Ch. Mavericks Goose who impressed us all with his outstanding game finding ability requiring little or no handling. The high quality of the dogs was reflected in the fact that no less than 14 went through to the second day. This included a duck drive outside the beet, over white grass and weeds where every dog had at least one retrieve. The Trial ended in roots once more and the judges awarded a fuller set of results than we have seen over the last five years. Many thanks to our judges, especially Graham Roberts who came down from East Sussex, to Heather Bradley and Basil Smith who were both trialling the previous day and to Vince Mitchell who proved an unusual and surprising after dinner entertainer with his disappearing chair act! Many thanks also to my good and faithful friend Hilary Smith who stewarded as well as making sandwiches and the usual superb cakes, to Elaine Kelleher once again who came to stay but ended up making sandwiches, judges books etc. and kept me sane when everything threatened to go pear shaped and to whom I owe a huge debt of gratitude! To Parsi and Jan from Finland; Parsi helped out game carrying with Rosie Dickens who was attending her first Trial and did an excellent job and to Gareth Davies who took over on the 2nd day, many thanks to you all. Thanks to Frank Wright for picking-up the first day and to Di Wiggin who took over on the second, and to everyone present for their indomitable good spirits, even when out, which is the mark of the true sportsman and woman and vitally important to the overall success of a Trial.

COM's and Guns Choice
Mr. K. Turner Shadowbrae Dude The first Novice Trial took place at Alvington on Friday 5th December with Robin Watson kindly judging in place of Graham West who had to pull out for medical reasons. We send Graham all our best wishes and hope he will make a full and speedy recovery. With Robin as A Panel, were Dave Field (B), Di Wiggin and Annie Wales (NP). As ever it was a hard day with mixed game, duck, pheasant and partridge, and many miles were walked before the judges declared the Trial over. Kevin Turners dog, Shadowbrae Dude showed excellent style and pace but was unfortunately eye-wiped on a partridge in the beet by Don James bitch, Llanover Gwen. Hilary Smiths young dog, Spiraldive Semillon, showed great game finding ability especially on a long, live cock bird shot in the kale which flicked up no less than three times before the dog picked it. It was undoubtedly the retrieve of the day. Llanover Gwen also showed excellent game finding ability and though the judges did not feel any dog had merited first place, Second Place went to Llanover Gwen and third to Spiraldive Semillon with CoM to Shadowbrae Dude, who was also awarded Guns Choice.

Mrs. L. Harris Chillean Spice with Hawksthorn Once again a hard day with birds not plentiful. We began with a couple of short drives the first of which was over frozen lakes so that birds falling on the ice couldnt unfortunately be used. Then we walked up the two beet fields during which a few duck were driven off the pond. Judges were Brian Gregory (A), with Sid Saturley (B,) Graham Bird and Leigh Jackson (NP) and it was a long and difficult day for them. Sadly some of the best dogs were out first dog down, including Peter Scott's dog Levenghyl River of Chisbrook, Margaret Pearces dog Esmoro Swift and Jane Coleys Dog Waterford Fergus all of which had shown some good work. Lisa Harriss G.R. bitch, Chillean Spice with Hawksthorn made a very promising debut but was overfaced by a running partridge which had fallen in the adjoining field. Don James bitch Llanover Gwen however, called in last thing the previous evening showed sufficient ability for the judges to award her first place, the only award given.

Stake R2 (2007). Results of the Novice Trial Saturday 8th December 2007, near Lydney. This had to be one of the wettest, most miserable days of the season! But thanks to the wisdom and excellent organisation of our A Panel Judge (and my predecessor) Vic Olner, it gave every dog the chance to demonstrate its best ability and we ended with a good set of results. The Stake started with a duck drive, and given the atrocious conditions, Vic very considerately decided to give each dog one retrieve in the first round. As there were enough birds down, each dog then had another single retrieve in the second round. Several birds were successfully retrieved from the water and Linda Partridges stylish yellow bitch, Braidenvale Fair Quilla succeeded in picking a bird in the reeds at the far end of the pond – made difficult because of the need to handle the dog between the water one side and enticing cover the other. Only one dog failed to have a second round retrieve on the ducks so we moved over the track into the remains of the sunflowers undersown with a mixture of gold of plenty and stubble turnips. This was ideal ground as there was enough cover to hold the birds yet it was possible to clearly see the dogs working. Despite the rain, birds came steadily to the guns who never failed to shoot with the best interests of the dogs in mind. The dogs in turn seemed to be little affected by the rain and those left in for the final rounds went out with speed and enthusiasm. My immense gratitude to all the judges, Vic Olner, Tim Shipp, Roy Morris and Nicola Rudgard for a really difficult job extremely well done and to Andy Patterson for his organisation of those stalwart guns! My thanks also to Hilary Smith who once again was a tower of strength dog stewarding - and to all who took part for the invincible good humour of the day, I never heard anyone complain once!

Stake R3 (2007). Results of the Novice Trial Saturday 14th December 2007, near Lydney.
In contrast, this was a perfect shooting day – overcast, but dry. We began by walking up in stubble turnips where birds once more came steadily to the guns and this was followed by a duck drive which more or less decided the result. Ducks fell over water, into crop and onto a very boggy grass field, which proved possibly the most difficult place from which to retrieve. A couple of retrieves in the crop behind the duck ponds completed the Trial and once more we had a good set of results. Again my grateful thanks to the two Skinners, Lynn and Malcolm, to Kerrie Morton and Nick Coates and of course to Andy Patterson and the guns. Thanks also to Iris Wright who very kindly offered to dog steward for me and did an excellent job keeping me in order! Also to Frank for very effective picking up. Once again there was a friendly and excellent atmosphere throughout and the dog work was generally of a high standard. The results were:
1st Millheath Ginger Quill Lab. Bitch Mrs. Caroline Nunneley
2nd Merryway Jezabel G.R. Bitch Mrs Hilary Smith
3rd Flaxfire Fabqiano Lab. Dog Mr. C. Walker
