Gatekeeper Ice Mrs. J. Smith Stake 2 Bristol & West Cocker Spaniel Open Trial. 9th of December 2009, Held at Lydney.
Judges, Mr. Malcolm Taylor (A) and Mr. Wes. Thomas (B) Another excellent field trial at Lydney, Josh the head keeper and his team put on a superb day and shot exceptionally well for the little dogs, the ground is one of the best in the country and lends its self to some testing retrieves, it is a real treat to be able to hold our open cocker trial on such superb ground, all laid bracken, some bramble and rushy grass in places. The birds also came well to hand, and the trial was over by 1.30 pm. A run off for first place was called, the two dogs were going well, and I think it was nip and tuck, until Jon Bailey's bitch Churchview Chimney, had a good find on a cock pheasant, which was promptly shot, she decided she would go self employed and didn't need dad to help her anymore, and ran in..All that way, what a pity!, but thats cockers for you. Thank you once again to the Judges, the Estate, Josh, and all that helped out on the day, the day couldn't run without you!

Judges, Mr Paul Wilson (A) & Mr Jeff Ayres (B) This from Geoff Shore, The Bristol and West Open English Springer Stake had us return to Spye Park for the first time in over a decade. The weather could be described as a perfect shooting day, a crisp cold winter's day without a cloud in the sky. The area of woodland that the competitors were asked to hunt was wooded with a boggy, rich bottom. bracken, fallen trees, bramble, sedges and reeds provided the cover and this was consistent throughout the day. The dogs hunted the cover well with a mixture of Pheasant, Rabbit and Woodcock providing the scent and retrieves. Guns Mark Wheeler, Dave Rayner, Glyn Smith, and I had a brilliant day full of action, with the game being provided in just the right quantity and frequency. The winner Alex Badger was gobsmacked by his win. In summary this was up there with the best spaniel trial I've ever been a part of and I know from the comments from pretty much everyone there that I am not alone. A fantastic day's trialling, words can't do it justice.

FTCh Breckswood Brock Simon Allison A report of the day is kindly given by Ben Randall. The day was run by the very experienced head keeper and cocker man Glyn Smith. John Dugay was running things for Bristol and West, great job John, thank you. The day started with all the usual faces turning up and some good humour was to make a great day. The ground was top class with birds coming to hand regularly. All the dogs were tested with all different types of cover from steep banks, bog areas, and good hard brambles. The experienced judges, Dave Rayner and Chris Thurston Woolnough judged each and every dog with total professionalism and good humour. There was to be a run off. Jeff Mc Andrew and Rod Chappell ran off first together, and then Simon Allison, Ben Randall and Leslie Keate had a three dog run off with Simon Alison coming out on top. GUNS CHOICE
Centrewalk Daydream Richard Preest Thanks to Dave Rayner for this report. Judges for the day were local judges, Jeremy Organ and Ben Randle, both experienced and knowledgeable spaniel men. This was the clubs first visit to this part of the famous Badminton estate. I was very privileged to be one of the guns for this trial along with John Semmens, Gary Atwill and Bob Sweet. The day started with a crisp frost, and after the initial introductions the trial was underway. As usual with Badminton the ground was superb, all woodland with a mixture of light to medium bramble, stick piles, white grass and some heavy bramble, which the 'little' dogs coped with in true cocker style. The birds came to hand very quickly along with the odd woodcock causing a few problems to find once shot due to the rapidly rising temperature and diminishing scent. As usual with trialling there were some unfortunate situations which either tripped the dogs up or the handlers and we lost a few very good dogs. The top dogs were quite evident though and the eventual winner also taking guns choice proved to be a great day for first time winner and head gardener for the estate of Badminton Richard Preest and with Glynn Smith pushing a very close second!! On behalf of the Bristol and West I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Duke and Duchess of Beaufort for their continued support and for providing us with such superb ground to run our dogs. Cheweky Hedge Cutter of Cowarncourt K. Powell Gary Atwill recounts the day for us. This year the trial was held over the same ground as usual but covered in a different sequence, which worked extremely well with birds flushing straight from the off and this continued throughout the day. The ground cover was variable but mainly bramble and at times was very tough and testing for all of the dogs. Some of the novice spaniels coped very well and this showed when it came to the results with the top dogs showing pace and courage in cover. When the judges Keith Carter and Norman Blakeney got together it didn't take them long to decide the trial was over with no run off required. Then it was back to the cars for the awards where the 1st place was awarded to dog number 11 Beggarbush Larch of Cowernecourt owned and handled by Mr Kevin Powell (congratulations Kevin). Throughout the day there was a great atmosphere despite the rain and as a bonus the sun came back out for the awards. Our guns Jeremy Organ, Dave Rayner, John Semmens and Geoff Shore were all experienced spaniel men and all shot well with a total bag of 34 Pheasants, 1 Woodcock and 1 Rabbit all before 1pm (can't be bad). A big thank you to everyone who helped in making this trial a success especially Richard Preest who helped direct the day as well as acting as a stop. Once again many thanks to The Duke and Duchess of Beaufort for providing us with such a superb venue.
