on the 22nd December 2016
Judges: Alex Badger (A) & Andy Fisher (N/P)
Guns: Richard Preest, Jeremy Organ, Andy Faulkner & Richard Biggs
Morning of the trial was a mild frosty one with a cold snap in the air. All competitors, and those involved in the day were all prompt on there arrival, so after the welcoming & safety speech the trial began at 9:20am.
The ground, consisted of a bramble woodland in and around a huge release pen on the estate, the dogs had to hunt for their game but they were there to ensure the dogs had their retrieves.

It was a high standard of dogs, just really unfortunate that some very nice dogs were put out, but sure there day will come.
The guns as you can see by the names above are all experienced spaniel men, which made the job easier for the judges and handlers alike.
After the two runs completed and judges finished there deliberations, the trial was announced over at 13:05pm, with a bag of 29 Pheasants, 2 Woodcock & 1 Pigeon, and 9 dogs finishing the trial.
I must say, this has been a great trial, good company, fantastic ground, and just a lovely relaxed day as everything went so smoothly, in my time as a field trial secretary this has been the first time l have had no competitors pull out before the trial, which certainly made my job easier, so thank you!
Also, a huge thank you to our hosts; The Duke & Duchess of Beaufort, our judges Alex & Andy for giving up there day.
Thanks and appreciation also goes to our Guns (named above), and our helpers such as the game carriers, stewards, picker upper & red flag, you are a fundamental part of these trials and we couldn't achieve smoothly ran trials without you, so again thank you!

STAKE 2. Open Cocker Spaniel Trial held at Brandhouse Farm
on the 15th November 2016
Judges: Steve Wanstall & Jeremy Davis
Brilliant trial today, ran very smoothly. All dogs had opportunity to show themselves off, even though birds were tending to run on abit which the dogs had to hunt for, much appreciation to the stops we had to hold the birds up. And the guns; Andy, Simon, Richard and Ian who are spaniel men who shot very well which made it easier for the judges to make there decision.
A big thank you to all those that helped today and a huge well done to Stuart Morgan, good luck in the championships and well done to all those in the awards.
The trial finished by 12:15, the bag consisted of 32 pheasant, 1 pigeon, and 1 rabbit
As always thank you so much to our host Mr Regis for allowing us to use the ground, Keeper Andy Fisher for all is hard work, and to all of our helpers that kindly given up there day to help us. And of course our Judges Steve & Jeremy and competitors, hope you all had enjoyed the day as much as we did. We do appreciate all the kind comments that we received too, makes our jobs worthwhile.

STAKE 2. Open Springer Spaniel Report held at Badminton Estate
on the 22nd October 2016
Judges: Mr Dave Anderson & Mr Paul Dyson
Guns: Andy Fisher, Richard Preest, Simon Jones & Lee Cummins
The day started off a little foggy, but that soon cleared, thankfully.
Once all the handlers arrived, l called all to gather round and gave a welcome & safety speech to our judges and all who attended.
The trial begun just before 9:30am, we began in the wooded pen, which consisted of heavy punishing bramble, which was actually better than it was at the Novice trial held there the week before due to the under keeper Todd, who kindly put some tracks in and bashed bramble down in places.
The dogs and handlers certainly had there work cut out due to the thickness of bramble in places, but you had to give those extremely brave dogs credit, they all managed to pick there game even though visual marking ability wasn’t the best due to the height of bramble, so there gun sense and handling really showed off.
Some really good dogs were put out unfortunately after long runs and at the crucial point of retrieves failed to deliver.
Just before a second run for one of the handlers, he and his dog walked straight into a wasps nest which the little blighters engulfed the dogs head, which understandably made the dog so subdued the owner quite rightly declined his second run and administered the necessary medication to his dog. Thankfully made a full recovery by the time the trial was over.
Dave Anderson finished his side of the card first and Paul Dyson had a few more dogs to see before the trial was announced over just before 2pm.
The deliberations between the judges didn’t take too long and obviously clear markings between them as no run off required.
After a short break for a bite to eat, all were gathered around for the news they have been waiting for.
Thank you’s; went to our Hosts, The Duke & Duchess Of Beaufort, our Judges Dave & Paul for there kindness in giving up there time to judge this trial, the Guns; Andy, Richard, Simon and to Lee for stepping in at last minute, and all those that helped me run the day; Stewards; Ester & Stephanie, Pauline, Game Carrier; Martin & Paul, Red flag; Ann, picker upper; Karen, trials don’t take place without the help of you all.
I do have to give a big thank you to Todd under keeper of the estate for all your hard work before and during the trials, everyone has commented what fantastic ground it is and one of the best trials to date.
Again Thank You All!

Stake 1. Novice Cocker Trial Report Held at Alford Shoot, Castle Cary
On the 8th October 2016
Judges John Cook & Tom Sheppard
We held the trial at Alford by kind permission of Mr Edward Thring and keeper Paul Smith.
The day started off a bit murky, but brightened up as the morning went on, the judges, guns, handlers and dogs made there way to the beat which is made up of woodland, rushes and bramble. And the trial began.
It was quite clear as time went on that there was a struggle for game as the birds were running on and the local hunt had gone through previously to that, which didn't help matters.
Some of the dogs had long runs, trying to get that flush, and some of the dogs went out for faults which lm sure will take those dogs back to the training drawing board so to speak.
The guns found it difficult to shoot due to the canopy on the trees, but Simon did a real good job with fifteen shots to thirteen birds.
After a long hunt up for the last dog in, the judges made there deliberations and the trial was announced over just before 3pm.
After heading back to the barn for a bite to eat, the landowner Edward Thring came to join us in handing out the awards.
As always at this ground Paul (keeper) and his team of helpers worked extremely hard to try and keep the birds in place, and we thank them all for all the effort they put in.
I would like to say a very big thank you to those who came and helped me on the day, it was very much appreciated, and to those all involved.
Most of all, thank you to Edward Thring, John Cook & Tom Sheppard, Guns (Andy, Simon, Colin & Roger) and all the handlers.

Novice Cocker Spaniel Trial - Stake 1, held at Alford Shoot, Castle Cary
By kind permission of Mr Edward Thring of Alford Shoot & Paul Smith the Keeper
Judges: Peter Jones & Gareth Davis
Guns: Andy Fisher, Simon Jones, Tom Shepherd & Colin Selwood
The trial commenced at 09:30hrs, on a lovely fresh morning with a full card. The ground consisted of woodland, rushes & bramble which was absolutely perfect for the novice cocker spaniels that competed.
Several handlers & dogs were put out due to various reasons, leaving eight finishing, one poor spaniel had the unfortunate ordeal of encountering a wasps nest, but thankfully the judge and gun acted swiftly, and the said dog was able to recover enough to complete her runs which resulted in gaining a certificate of merit.
It was nice to see a new handler in this trial and also gaining a certificate of merit in his first trial.
All handlers, judges & guns alike thoroughly enjoyed the ground and all the hard work that Paul the gamekeeper and his trusted team of stops, did to ensure all the birds were contained to the area's we used with the birds coming to hand.
We can't thank Paul & Mr Thring enough for allowing us to use such great ground for the third year running and as previously it was a great success.
There was a run of for first place between Julie Etherington & James Luxford dogs, the judges were left for a short while to tally up there findings and results finalised, which then the trial was deemed over at approx 12:30hrs.
On returning to the meeting place on the estate, there was a short break for refreshment and then the results were announced, the awards were kindly given out by Mr Thring.
The spaniel section thanked Mr Thring for his good will with a gift and also Paul & his team of helpers. Then went on to thank the judges for giving up there day on behalf of the Bristol & West with a gift each. Also a big thank you to the guns.

Open English Spaniel Stake - Stake 2, held on Badminton Estate
By kind permission of the Duke & Duchess of Beaufort
Judges:- Mr Jack Iliffe & Mr Alex Badger
Guns:- Colin Selwood, Roger Wildsmith, Richard Preest & Paul
We started the trial at 9:30 on new ground at Hawkesbury Upton, belonging to the Badminton Estate.
The ground consisted of a huge pen within a woodland with punishing bramble in parts & then tufty white grass.
Unfortunately, when the trial started we only ended up with 15 dogs running due to a handlers dog being unwell.
As the morning went on, the sun came out making it a glorious warm day. The handlers had birds coming to them frequently and with multiple flushes, which truly tested the dogs ability and the guns shot well to ensure the game was there to be picked. One gun was thrilled to have shot his first rabbit, which made his day, as well as the winners of course.
I do have to thank the guns for there continued support on the trials and the helpers Donna & Nick which was their first day at a trial and they did a grand job.
The trial was deemed over at approx 14:20 with the bag consisting of 24 pheasants and 1 rabbit.
Thank you to Richard Preest for organising the ground and to our sponsors, Skinners.

Open Cocker Spaniel Stake - Stake 4. Report 12/11/15
By kind permission of Mr & Mrs Regis held at Brandhouse Farm, Tetbury.
Judges: Graham West & Ian Flint
Guns: Andy Fisher, Richard Biggs, Andy Faulkner & Graham Cummins
It was a foggy start to the day & there was an unfortunate accident on the M5 which caused ome competitor to arrive late.
The trial started at 9:45, which began in a Pollen & Nectar crop, where it truly tested the dogs as it held plenty of game. Each dog had an opportunity to shine in their runs, but unfortunately quite a few dogs went out for various reasons.
We then moved onto the Kale crop, which again challenged the dog and handler alike. We quickly moved onto another crop which then led into woodland and again more dogs were going out of the running.
After the judges collated their books, the trial was devlared over at 12:40 with only four dogs finishing.
Back at the barn for refreshments the the remaining gallery were gathered around for the results. Before the results were announced l thanked the judges for giving up there day to judge for us, thanked the guns, and Andy the Keeper for all his hard work throughout the year preparing the ground with crops and for the copious amount of birds that came to each dog. I also thanked the stops who had been out since 07:15 that morning, the stewards & the game carriers who had given up there day to make the trial a success. Without these people within the sport of trialling we would struggle to continue to provide competitors with the sport they participate in.
Once again thank you to you all!
Total head for the day was 18 pheasants 2 partridge and a rabbit.
Congratulations to Richard Preest on making up his bitch to FTCH and a thank you to the A panel judges for staying on to witness the qualifying water retrieve.

Tautavel Kirsty at Samalgmore handled by Ann Kedward.
Training Days
Commander Thring kindly gave us access to his ground at Alford with full support from keeper Paul Smith who gave us exactly what was required.
Damp overnight with a heavy dew, it was perfect training weather in the morning and the assembled group were in good spirits. The dogs were very much mixed abilities with most being young or very young, which is always pleasing. Hopefully all were able to take something away from the day, which was designed to make the handlers consider the basic and yet most important tools in the box as far as training is concerned . The stop whistle and body language being paramount.
It is always hard to see any immediate progress in just one day, but I think it is fair to say that all dogs improved during the day and with perseverance and patience, most will repay the efforts of the handlers. There were several smart young dogs that could certainly do well in the future.
Our thanks to Paul for setting this up for the Club.
